A beginner's guide to value betting
Ten minutes to understand odds, probability, EV and bankroll – before you stake a single euro.
1. Odds are probabilities
Decimal odds × probability = payout. Implied probability = 1 ÷ odds. Odds 2.00 → 50%, 4.00 → 25%.
2. Bookmakers add a margin
Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes: it's more than 100%. The surplus (e.g. 105%) is the bookmaker's margin.
3. Fair odds
Remove the margin from a sharp market like Pinnacle and you get the fair probability – our best estimate of the truth.
4. Expected value (EV)
EV = fair probability × offered odds − 1. Positive EV means the price is too generous. +5% EV = on average +€5 per €100 staked, long-term.
5. Variance is normal
With odds around 2.0 you can lose 8 or 10 bets in a row while doing everything right. Judge results after 500+ bets, not 20.
6. Bankroll first
Use a dedicated betting budget you can afford to lose and set it with /bankroll. OddsNineR calculates every stake automatically: quarter-Kelly, never more than 2% of your bankroll. Never raise stakes to win back losses.
7. Your first week
Start the trial → connect Telegram → set bankroll with /bankroll → read alerts without betting for 2–3 days → place small bets.
8. Limits and stopping
Set deposit limits at your bookmaker. Stop when your budget is used. If betting affects sleep, money or relationships, pause and seek help.
